Home Healthcare Training System

My Role/Contribution:

- Designed and coded the hint system within a Virtual Simulation Training Program (using Unity and C#) which was developed to train home healthcare professionals.
- Carried out formative usability testing for the hint system and improved the features.
Phase I:
Develop a Virtual Simulation Training System (VSTS), using an interdisciplinary, participatory design approach.

-
Questionnaire
-
8 focus groups, 37 interviews
-
Participants' room drawing

Transcript analysis to learn about
-
Types of hazards
-
Room of hazard
System Development:

-
Program: Unity + C#
-
Hazard information: Excel spreadsheet

Phase II:
Assess the usability, usefulness, and desirability of the VSTS across multiple professional disciplines.
Usability Evaluation Result:
-
Easy to use (88%)
-
Easy to move around (75%)
-
Easy to click on hazards (63%)
-
Not hard to see hazards (75%)
-
Dialog boxes easy to click thru (100%)
... ...
-
Took too long to finish (25%)
Potential Solution:

Hints that guide the users to the rest of the hazardous objects
Designed the hint system

-
Text + Audio alert
-
Time point of hint delivery
Program coding
Interface development
Usability Testing

• Hints are triggered at the right time point
• Hints catch the user attention
• Hints direct the user to the right object
• Hints show up/turned off as needed
Phase III (Ongoing):
Evaluate the efficacy of the VSTS in preparing home healthcare professionals to recognize, assess, and respond to hazards in the home health environment using appropriate risk perception and decision-making processes
